I can’t stand that word! Society has defined what is normal vs abnormal when it comes to sexuality and who people partner with. Although homosexuality can be considered more rare, I do not believe defining it as abnormal is fair or fitting.

Also, it pains me that people feel so ostracized by society that they willingly label themselves accordingly. I cannot empathize with your struggles of feeling isolated, as I myself am not gay, but some of the most important people in my life are… even my boss whom I adore.

I hope you find acceptance and love that you deserve. You’re rare like a ruby, not abnormal like a manufacturing defect.

Comment on Homosexuality And Finger Length by Preston Grant http://www.gayexplained.com/homosexuality-finger-length/#comment-7955 Fri, 14 Oct 2016 04:04:33 +0000 http://www.gayexplained.com/?p=766#comment-7955 It took me a second of looking at the text and the photos to figure out the problem – I got my rings and indexes crossed. It’s the text that was wrong… men typically have longer index fingers, not ring fingers. I have corrected the post. (I also changed “normal” for “typical” to be more clear.) I think he will be OK. People will always find reasons to hate, but anti-gay hate is dropping so fast it is kind of breathtaking. Even with all the people being hated in our current presidential election, for example, anti-gay hate is pretty much missing. This is a first in my adult life, a profound change, and the young ones are leading the way. Your son should find his peers widely supportive as he moves into adulthood. And best of luck to you both! ]]> Comment on Advice for Parents whose Child just Came Out as Gay by Yolanda http://www.gayexplained.com/parents-with-gay-child/#comment-7953 Thu, 13 Oct 2016 18:38:00 +0000 http://www.gayexplained.com/?p=1415#comment-7953 Thank you!! my 18 year old son just came out and even though I kind a had an idea it wasn’t real until he told us. I love my son and that’s what I told him and gave him a huge hug. I feel this sadness not because he’s gay but because of the cruel people out there. I don’t want anybody hurting him in any way. ]]> Comment on Homosexuality And Finger Length by gavindave http://www.gayexplained.com/homosexuality-finger-length/#comment-7948 Wed, 21 Sep 2016 13:25:20 +0000 http://www.gayexplained.com/?p=766#comment-7948 Forgive me if i’ve mixed up my lefts and rights here. But in the picture Kamrans hand is on the right, which you say has a “normal” amount of testosterone. We’ll gloss over the word normal as if your fingers a a relative length to each other that causes no concern you’re normal. But I digress, just not a fan of the word normal.

“In general, men tend to have longer index fingers than ring fingers, while women’s index fingers tend to be the same size or slightly shorter than their ring fingers.”

If thats the case and kamran has a normal amount of testosterone and has a masculanised hand. Wouldn’t his index finger be longer than his ring finger. Which from the picture doesn’t appear to be the case. Are Hollywood camera angles to blame here?

Personally my ring finger is longer than my index. I am a bisexual man with one older brother. (just for the sake of comparison)

Comment on Why Gay Men Are So Promiscuous by João Pimentel Ferreira http://www.gayexplained.com/promiscuous/#comment-7944 Sun, 28 Aug 2016 12:12:04 +0000 http://www.gayexplained.com/?p=1474#comment-7944 Excellent article with no misleading (bullshit?) deviation from scientific approach, like this one from The Guardian, which uses as a sample, the members of a dating club, which are statistically a priori more predisposed to sexual intercourse. Gay men are more promiscuous and that is simply a fact! ]]> Comment on Advice for Parents whose Child just Came Out as Gay by Preston Grant http://www.gayexplained.com/parents-with-gay-child/#comment-7943 Fri, 19 Aug 2016 22:16:05 +0000 http://www.gayexplained.com/?p=1415#comment-7943 What a great story, thank you for sharing it. And yeah, it sounds like your daughter had expectations you didn’t meet, not because you were crummy about it, but what you thought she needed was different than what she thought she needed. In a small way it sounds like you got set up. The event weighed more heavily on her on her than she let on, as she presented it casually, and then your response was casual back, which is not really what she wanted! So funny how all that works. You sound like a great but imperfect mom, which is the best any of us can achieve, and now you get to loop back to the deeper questions around things she needs acknowledged. Congratulations, and keep up the good work, Mom. ;) ]]> Comment on Advice for Parents whose Child just Came Out as Gay by Mom http://www.gayexplained.com/parents-with-gay-child/#comment-7942 Fri, 19 Aug 2016 14:34:35 +0000 http://www.gayexplained.com/?p=1415#comment-7942 Thank you . This article is radically exactly what I needed to read today. I am a straight activist for the LGBT community and have been for decades, but found myself radically thrown off course when my 16 year old daughter came out to me this week by showing me a picture of her girlfriend. I apparently handled it all wrong and was supposed to have some kind of “more” reaction, when my first reaction was “Oh! She’s pretty! Is she nice to you? Are you happy?” We are working through it, but I was neither surprised or upset or even thought it was an issue, until she got upset that I was not making a big enough deal about it. My thought is that its no different than when she’s showed me pictures of boyfriends (except I’m less worried about pregnancy). Apparently it was a bigger deal for her than I understood. She’s not angry with me and we are working through it slowly, but I am still trying to navigate the conversation and feel like I stepped into a landmine in the middle of a bright open and loving field of flowers! ]]> Comment on The LGBTQQIAAP (or LGBTTIQQ2SA) Community, and Why by Preston Grant http://www.gayexplained.com/lgbtqqiaap-community/#comment-7937 Fri, 05 Aug 2016 05:55:58 +0000 http://www.gayexplained.com/?p=683#comment-7937 Well, if you feel that, then you feel that. In the same way that we call people of CALD background CALD (culturally and linguistically diverse) instead of CPSIMXXXX Chinese Philippino Sri Lankan Indian Malyasian… It is also more respectful, without having to explain away who you are – it’s no one’s business until you make it so! By naming all the individual traits (or nationalities), you’re inadvertently implying the to supply personal details by defining all possible orientations/nationalities which in itself is oppressive. ]]> Comment on Why Gay Men Are So Promiscuous by Preston Grant http://www.gayexplained.com/promiscuous/#comment-7932 Thu, 21 Jul 2016 04:33:04 +0000 http://www.gayexplained.com/?p=1474#comment-7932 I agree in a way. I find that though that may possibly be true in nature, it’s as ignorant as saying “men rape women/men because they’re wired that way”. It’s called self-control and self-respect and it’s something that I as a gay man notice many other gay men lack. ]]> Comment on Gay Myths: Apollo by solangelogirl http://www.gayexplained.com/gay-myths-apollo/#comment-7916 Tue, 14 Jun 2016 01:59:42 +0000 http://www.gayexplained.com/?p=851#comment-7916 It’s so sad. Take a gene that leads to breast cancer – not helpful to species success. Unless… that same gene plays other roles in the body. There is strong evidence that a gene that tends to make some boys gay, for example, might make his sisters more fertile. That same gene expressed mildly in his straight brothers might make them more gentle and better husbands. Or the occasional gay male in the tribe, unattached to any women, might benefit the clan’s overall survival rate. There are many more examples out there, but those three give you the idea. A gene can play multiple roles depending on how it is expressed in the individual, while benefitting the species as a whole. ]]> Comment on Homosexuality And Finger Length by Preston Grant http://www.gayexplained.com/homosexuality-finger-length/#comment-7903 Mon, 06 Jun 2016 01:16:52 +0000 http://www.gayexplained.com/?p=766#comment-7903 hehe. Well Vee, we all vary. What the body things show is propensities – correlations, not causation. So you can have some finger length, but that really tells us nothing about you as a person. But times thousands of people we might find that lots of people with short pinkies are extra smart or something, which is an interesting thing if we connect pinkie length to some other process in early in embryonic development – it might help us locate a process that affects intelligence. Biology is not destiny, but they do correlate sometimes. ;) ]]> Comment on How I Feel About Being Called a Fag by Preston Grant http://www.gayexplained.com/feel-called-fag/#comment-7902 Mon, 06 Jun 2016 01:09:22 +0000 http://www.gayexplained.com/?p=567#comment-7902 What to say, noob. Things go like that. One piece of advice I can share – just because you hurt doesn’t mean you are broken. As you say, you were judged, unfairly I am sure. You hurt because people hurt you. The thing to do now is to stay in touch with your unwounded bits, and let them shine. Over time they can take the lead, and you can let the bruises heal. The judgers were wrong. You were too underwater to know that then, but you can start to see it now. There is no easy fix to make life’s path easier, but as we go we get better at it. It sounds like you are new, noob, and you will get better with practice. I promise. Be gentle with yourself, and let those tender bits unfold in their own time and at their own pace. They are part of what makes you beautiful. ]]> Comment on How I Feel About Being Called a Fag by noob http://www.gayexplained.com/feel-called-fag/#comment-7835 Mon, 23 May 2016 10:29:48 +0000 http://www.gayexplained.com/?p=567#comment-7835 I was called gay before I even knew I was gay haha. I loathe being gay because I always pictured myself with a woman and having my own family. I tried to desperately be straight. I think I’m bisexual and would be more comfortable with a woman. I have a feeling I’m forever alone. I’ve lost contact with almost everyone except siblings. I want to die, I’m tired. People judging caused me to judge myself. I’m damaged beyond repair. What a wonderful choice I’ve made, as well as thousands of ancestors. Really, though, to call it a “choice” to be gay, is hysterical. Do you really think we chose to be hated among many people and many to even be murdered? I grew up Catholic, and also grew up being told how sinful it is to be gay. I, just a six year old at the time, consciously knowing I would be going to Hell, for the way God created me? It’s very unsettling for such a young child to hear those horrific speculations. It is not a choice. The people who go around saying “I think I’ll just become gay” disgust me, because you are unable to do that. Also, there have been thousands of cases of animals taking part in homosexual attractions. If someone actually does their research, that can easily be found. To tell me that I chose to live a life of suffering, to be told I can never get married, and that I will suffer in Hell for eternity, truly unfolds the cluelessness of anyone who believes being gay, as a mortal sin, is a choice. I did not choose this lifestyle, and neither did the millions of people who were and are gay. Those who lost their lives, those who had to lie and pretend they were heterosexual in order to survive. I apologize for going on, but it’s truly incredible how many people actually believe that I, as well as many others, had a choice to endure lifelong suffering, and then to be cast into Hell. I know God made me this way, as well as so many others around the world. We did not choose this. ]]> Comment on Homosexuality And Finger Length by Vee http://www.gayexplained.com/homosexuality-finger-length/#comment-7552 Thu, 07 Apr 2016 15:48:30 +0000 http://www.gayexplained.com/?p=766#comment-7552 But what is the percentage?
